Crimson Use Momentum in 2nd half to Prevail Over Trojans

On a perfect October night in a packed Grove Stadium, the Crimson prevailed over a very good Wayzata team, 21 - 3.   Trailing at halftime 3 - 0, we gained momentum in the 3rd quarter behind a defense that caused 4 turnovers, and an opportunistic offense that took advantage of what the defense gave them.    However, this night will be remembered for the atmosphere of the game itself and the electricity that was felt by the crowd that filled the stadium and had a blast all night.   It was awesome, and it was all the kids talked about at our Saturday morning meeting following the game.

Offensively, after getting shut-out in the first half, we found ways to put points on the board in many different ways.   However, Derrick Jameson still impressed as he shows that at any time he has the ability to break it as he rushed for 165 yards on 14 carries and had two electrifying touchdowns of 84 and 50 yards.   Also, wide receiver Cole Newell threw a touchdown pass to Jacob Kilzer on a play the kids executed perfectly after we had momentum following a turnover.   It was not a perfect game offensively by any means, as we still have to keep improving up front and becoming more physical at the point of attack, but they also showed how explosive they can be if they do their jobs and keep moving forward.

Even though we had some entertaining offensive touchdowns, the day clearly belonged to our Defense.   Sawyer Skanson had 16 total tackles, two of them for loss, and junior Jacob Anderson made a ton of game changing plays with 12 total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception.    Aiden McMahon continued his great play with 9 total tackles.  Kiers Brevik had 9 total tackles and a sack and Mason South collected his 9th sack of the year.   Also, Jackson powers pulled in his 2nd interception of the year on defense, Bernier Gaines blocked a punt which gave us great field position and Cade Cook was physical all night from his Outside Linebacker spot.   I was proud how they shut down a great run offense and provided enough pressure on the passer that it kept Wayzata on their heels throughout the night.   This group will continue to lead us and I look forward to seeing them grow throughout the year because they are cog to our team.

Our special teams were consistently good again as our kickoff team consistently  pinned them inside their 20 yard line on kickoffs, and Connor Fournier keeps doing a great job at kicker making all 3 of his extra points and hitting the crossbar on a 49 yard attempt that I know he will make in future weeks.

Next week we play a very good St. Michael team that is getting healthier and is widely known as one of the state's best.   It will be a great challenge for us that we cannot wait for, and it will take a great week of preparation to get us ready as we enter our final home game that will honor our Seniors.   No better way to honor them to go in and play our absolute best against one of the state's best and come out victorious.   Nothing better than that!   We need the Grove rocking because they are known to travel well, so it could be an unreal atmosphere again in The Grove!   Go Crimson!  Let's claim the Section, and finish our home season with a great night!
