Friday night was as special as they come. Our home opener featured a packed crowd, a Crimson-out theme, and an incredible atmosphere highlighted by Dave Malenke “Youth Night.” The MGYFA players once again made an awesome tunnel and filled the end zone. I’m confident Dave would be proud of the impact our youth program continues to have in building the future of Crimson Football.
We started a little slower than we would like, stalling on our first couple possessions and giving up a long drive that ended in seven points early in the second quarter. Fortunately, our offense responded with a strong two-minute drive, capped off by a one-yard sneak from Kaden Harney with just nine seconds left in the half. We went into the locker room tied 7-7.
At halftime, our staff made some key adjustments, and the players responded. Defensively, we played our best football of the season, holding Eden Prairie to just five total yards over four straight drives. Beaux Thyen set the tone with his toughness and energy up front. Offensively, we strung together two long scoring drives — one on a powerful run by James Engle, and the other on a clutch reception by Jeffrey Nordvold. A huge block by Karris Ellingson on the run play was a perfect example of the selfless effort that doesn’t always show up in the box score.
Eden Prairie fought back with a late score, but our hands team came through when Ben Banwart recovered a tough onside kick with just over two minutes remaining. With the game still in the balance, Harney broke free for a 50+ yard touchdown run to seal the 28-14 victory.
That win marked our second straight victory over a top-10 opponent. While there are still plenty of areas to improve, our team continues to show that we can compete and succeed at the highest level.
This week we face another big challenge as we prepare for Mounds View, a state tournament team from last season. Our seniors will also take part in Teacher Appreciation Night, honoring the educators who have made an impact in their lives. We look forward to celebrating them pregame and competing in front of another packed house.
I’m proud of the way our team continues to battle and grow each week. The focus for the week will be to keep improving daily, trust each other, and play Crimson Football.
