One word best describes Friday night under the lights in Edina: wet. The second half brought a relentless downpour, yet the Maple Grove Crimson seemed to thrive in the storm, turning adversity into fuel for a dominant finish.

Early on, though, the Crimson had to fight from behind. Edina struck first, and for the first time this season, we trailed at halftime. The Hornets’ defense stifled the Crimson offense in the opening drives, forcing a turnover deep in Edina territory. On the other side of the ball, Maple Grove’s defense played with speed and energy.  We unfortunately allowed one big play that allowed Edina to build a lead heading into the break.

A lengthy halftime—extended by Edina’s homecoming festivities and fireworks—proved to be a blessing in disguise. It gave Maple Grove’s coaching staff extra time to adjust and remind their players to play loose and confident. When the teams returned to the field, the Crimson were ready.

Despite the rain intensifying, Maple Grove’s offense found its rhythm, scoring on four consecutive possessions. Running back James Engle powered the ground game, showing patience and vision behind his offensive line. Quarterback Kaden Harney continued his connection with Henry Knutson, delivering another deep strike for a big gain.

Defensively, the Crimson delivered their best stretch of football this season, holding Edina to just nine yards over a quarter and a half. The defensive line set the tone, with Julian Cipala notching his first career sack and Bryce Geren disrupting plays all night. In the secondary, Ryder Skanson and Gavin Elmquist came up with key interceptions against a talented Hornet quarterback, sealing the momentum shift.

By the final whistle, Maple Grove had pulled away for a decisive four-score victory.  This was more impressive given the tough start and difficult conditions. Even with points left on the board, the Crimson’s ability to stay composed and trust their preparation was evident at the end of the night.

Next week presents another top matchup, a long road trip to Moorhead to take on the top-10 ranked Spuds. With talent on both sides of the ball, Moorhead will challenge the Crimson in every phase of the game.  Maple Grove heads north and west with confidence, momentum and the support of a passionate fan base eager to make their presence felt on the road.

GO CRIMSON
