Disastrous 2nd quarter dooms Crimson gridders

Forest Lake exploded for three touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter and held on to defeat host Maple Grove Friday, Aug. 29, in Twin Cities Suburban Conference football action.

The Crimson got off to a great start with quarterback C.J. Woodrow connecting with junior receiver Jeff Hesse on a 33-yard touchdown pass early in the game. The Rangers tied it 7-7 on a long touchdown run but Maple Grove went back on top 14-7 on a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Justin Lehman.

Then came the disastrous second quarter when the Rangers scored on three long touchdowns and added a field goal to grab a commanding 32-14 lead at halftime.

The Crimson got back into the game on a 5-yard touchdown run by Lehman and a safety by Chris Dykhoff in teh third quarter to colse the gap to 32-24, but that's as close as they could get.

Offensively, the Crimson had 158 yards rushing and 122 yards passing. Lehman finished with 101 yards on 18 carries and Hesse caught four balls for 98 yards.

Jon Dubel had two interceptions to lead the defense, Brett Schendele had 12 tackles, Luke Craven 11 and Tom Owen recorded eight tackles.

The Crimson next travel to Mounds View Friday, Sept. 5.
