Maple Grove football coach Matt Lombardi continues to have his way with his former squad.

So did Lombardi’s defense in a 24-6 rout of Wayzata on a rain-soaked Friday, Sept. 18, in Plymouth. The Crimson held the Trojans to 132 yards of total offense and a season-low six points.

An improving, young Crimson defense also cashed in on a big fumble recovery late in the first half. It set up Crimson quarterback Brad Davison’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Teddy Raasch for a 14-0 lead.

Wayzata never recovered and the turnovers only mounted as the Crimson caused four. Davison led the offense with 108 yards passing, a TD pass and a TD run. Samuel Ross added a third TD on a 3-yard run to bury the Trojans 21-0 in the third quarter.

Wayzata didn’t get on the board until the final quarter on a quick, two-play drive scoring drive. Otherwise, the Trojans could hardly move the ball against the Crimson.

Lombardi won for the second time against his former squad. The Crimson beat Wayzata 34-7 last year.

Maple Grove upped its record to 3-2 with Friday’s win and will host Minnetonka Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. for the school’s 20th homecoming game.

The Skippers have been struggling of late with back-to-back losses against Wayzata and Eden Prairie. Combined, Maple Grove outscored those teams 52-26 with a win over the Trojans and a one-TD loss to the Eagles.
